Osteopathy and Parkinson's disease


Somatic dysfunction describes impaired or altered function of various components of the body. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) aims to promote homeostasis by targeting and treating somatic dysfunctions to improve biomechanical, neurological, circulatory, metabolic and behavioral functions.


Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to impaired motor and non-motor function in patients, gradually reducing quality of life and leading patients to seek treatment to manage symptoms. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) applies biomechanical, neurological, circulatory, metabolic and psychosocial models in the approach and treatment of the main symptoms of patients with Parkinson's disease, and has been shown in several studies to be a treatment modality complementary to therapies rehabilitation treatments effective for reducing symptoms and improving quality of life, and particularly useful in treating pain, neurological and motor symptoms.
