Osteopathy and gastroesophageal reflux

Osteopathy and gastroesophageal reflux

Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD) is a pathology related to part of the stomach rising into the chest through the lower esophageal sphincter (hiatal hernia). Due to this ascent it happens that the acid that arrives from the stomach and the bile that arrives in the stomach from the duodenum tend to go back towards the esophagus due to an inverted praetorian gradient, exposing them to erosive action due to the presence of inappropriate pH. Rigidity and visceral motility irregularities can also promote reflux.

In recent years, several studies have been released on the results of applying manual techniques on the symptoms of reflux. All approaches are aimed at increasing the efficiency of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), re-tensioning the pillars of the diaphragm (remember that the LES is located to the left of T11) and rebalancing it, taking into account the restoration of a better abdominal visceral motility. The techniques that are therefore used are mainly visceral with projections on the colon, stomach, LES, mediastinum accompanied by cost-thoracic, myofascial mobilizations on the diaphragm and suboccipitals and harmonization of the neurological passages at the level of the posterior foramen lacerum.
