WHEN THE JAW HOLDS THE PERFORMANCE: Hands-on work: removing obstacles rather than creating performance

My clinical approach does not attempt to manufacture emotion or change an actress's interpretation.

The artistic process belongs to the performer and the creative team.

Clinical support has a different role:

remove unnecessary physical obstacles so that the performer has more options available.

Depending on the individual assessment, hands-on work may address:

  • mandibular mobility

  • masseter and temporalis tension

  • suprahyoid tissues

  • tongue–hyoid relationships

  • anterior cervical tension

  • upper cervical mobility

  • thoracic mechanics

  • respiratory coordination

  • laryngeal mobility

The objective is not maximum relaxation.

It is minimum unnecessary effort.

After treatment, the actress should not feel disconnected from the emotional intensity required by the scene.

Ideally, she simply has more physical freedom with which to express it.
